Property Doctor offers a Prescription for the Market Blues

At a seminar for local business owners the other night, we sat through three presentations of differing standards, the one that worried me the most was from the leading accountant of the area who spent an inordinate amount of time discussing S.W.O.T. analysis, as he probably prepares the accounts for most of the companies represented (not ours!) he probably does know what they need to learn but still this is 2009.
Our second speaker got up and started with his conclusion ‘if they owe you money – sue them, if they cant pay you – shoot them’ and then went on to give a very well delivered speech on checking references, researching companies and debt collection.
The final speaker was a local doctor, I was rather looking forward to what he was going to say and his intro certainly got my hopes up, but how ever well meaning you are, a little research before you begin goes a long way, offering advice on diversification and then using examples already in play just looks a little silly.
Having got past this he did have some good, common sense advice;.- stop being pessimistic, chin up and best foot forward. At any moment I thought we were going to hear ‘fix bayonets’ ‘they don’t like it up ‘em’ and ‘the old cold steel’, I rather wish we had as it would have relieved the tedium until drinks were finally served.
Why is it always problems and oportunities? why can’t people see that it’s all perception, life goes on and the world keeps spinning, just for a few moments a few people have perception problems. Well and some of our more Machiavellian brothers having been lining their pockets.
The wine flowed and our table seemed to be composed of comedians (probably not as funny as we thought) and the next day I wished there was a doctor on hand as I trudged from one meeting to the next.

Sounds like a combination of the first year at business school and the Wild West!
A good idea though, if they don´t pay shoot them, do you have phone number for the person!

Yep I went to this as well. Very hit and miss affair but interesting none the less. The first speaker took an age to go through his presentation & was probably talking to the converted – those who actaully need his words of wisdom on business plans and p & ls may not have been astute enough to turn up! It wasn’t really what I was expecting but at least the chap telling us to shoot our debtors made me laugh! As for the lovely doctor hmmm he meant well but none of his ideas were original and he needs to learn to throw his voice more… best bit of the evening? drinks and dinner after! So not a total waste of time!
